Feeling a bit tramontane?

Did you know that the word ‘Tramontane’ can be used as an adjective and means “on or coming from the other side of the mountains” as opposed to ‘cismontane’ which means on this (the speaker’s) side of the mountain?

As well as being used to describe anyone who lives on the other side of mountains, it can refer  more generally to  anything or anyone seen as foreign, strange, or even barbarous. Maybe it’s because they’re likely to put the wind up you!
