Les Estivales 2010
In July 2010, the Estivales, Perpignan summer festival of dance, music and theatre, will celebrate its 23rd anniversary with shows of live music, theatre and dance at the Campo Santo, and « Scènes ouvertes » at the Couvent des Minimes, along with cinema and various other forms of entertainment.
The Estivales began twenty years ago when a group of friends, passionate about theatre in historical surrounding, created « Nuits Estivales » based around a programme of classical theatre and held at the Palais des Rois de Majorque. An immediate success, the festival grew quickly, turning to southern culture for its theme: Mediterranean, Catalan, Spanish, African, gypsy, Middle East, Latin America………… In 1992, Estivales put forward « 1492 Pour tout l’or de Grenade » and in 1993, four productions including the unforgettable « Sud, Voix de Femmes de la Méditerranée », gradually enlarging its fields to include not only theatre but also music, dance, meetings, lectures, and tertulias, (creative activities often providing a forum where people can get together for discussion). The festival moved to new venues, the couvent des Minimes and many other live spots within the department, usually in the open air.
In 1994, the stage of the Campo Santo was opened to the public and since then, July has become the great cultural rendezvous of Perpignan with more than 20.000 faithful followers every year.
Today, the festival retains its Mediterranean flavour and colour as it opens this year with French operatic tenor, Roberto Alagna singing SICILIEN.

NEDERLANDS DANS THEATER - Whereabouts Unknown and Minus 16
Founded in 1959 by Benjamin Harkarvy, Aart Verstegen and Carel Birnie together with a group of 18 members of the Dutch National Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) is a Dutch contemporary dance
company.
Wherabouts Unknown was inspired by choreographer Jiř Kylian’s interest in the tribal movements of the Australian Aborigines, he says "’There is a line in my work which always traces back to the ’whereabouts’ of our existence. Dances of the Australian Aborigines or rhythms, rituals, masks of African people - the point of my interest is the same: It is the traces old civilizations have left. Artifacts, materials, traditions speak by themselves, show the way back into a living past. The attempt is to journey into their world to discover our world - by trying to read the controversial messages of the conscious and unconscious, the visible and hidden, to uncover those above and those under the ground.’
Minus 16 is set to a thrilling musical compilation of cha-cha, mambo and traditional Israeli music. Featuring the entire company and with influences as diverse as the Jewish tradition, A Chorus Line, Latin American dance and even Break-dance jam sessions, it is divided into a number of sections, in one of which each dancer brings a member of the audience onstage to dance with them!

MARÍA PAGÉS & SIDI LARBI CHERKAOUI- Dunas
Sevillian, María Pagés and Belgian-Moroccan, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, two of the world’s most celebrated dancemakers, come together in a superb collaboration, uniting Flamenco and Contemporary Dance. Inspired by the undulating landscape of sand dunes, Dunas set against an original music score coloured with echoes of flamenco, classical and Arabic music. The fiery passion of Pagés’s classically structured form and the nuanced richness of Cherkaoui’s modern intercultural style make this a creation of exceptional brilliance. Famous for her long, expressive arms and her warm, charismatic stage presence, María Pagés, 44, is one of Spain’s leading flamenco dancers.
THEATRE
LA NUIT DES ROIS (Twelfth Night) - Shakespeare
CIRQUE INVISIBLE - Victoria Chaplin & Jean-Baptiste Thierrée
| Wednesday 7th July | Campo Santo | 21h45 |
LA NUIT DES ROIS (Twelfth Night) - Shakespeare
A romantic comedy by Shakespeare in which 13 actors play, dance and love in this modern take on the classic under the gleeful direction of Nicolas Briançon.
Viola (Sara Giraudeau) and her twin brother are shipwrecked on the island Illyria. Each believes the other is dead. Viola enters the service of Duke Orsino, who she loves in secret, by disguising herself as a page. The Duke, in love with the Countess (Chloé Lambert), sends the page (Viola) to pay his respects to the Countess.
The countess falls in love with the page!
Turning around the Countess, 4 characters release their torment on the grumpy steward (Henry Coursaux). This subplot is instigated by the jester, full of wisdom and irreverence (Arie Elmaleh), the amorous alcoholics and Olivia’s uncle Sir Toby (Yves Pignot) and the knight Sir Andrew (Francois Siener), who is also in love with the Countess.
Modern and precise costumes such as Sir Toby’s and the knight’s kilts, the sober and imposing walls made of huge curtains, and the quirky original music make this a special
piece.
| Friday 16th and Saturday 17th July | Campo Santo | 21h45 |
CIRQUE INVISIBLE - Victoria Chaplin & Jean-Baptiste Thierrée
Grand- daughter of Irish American playwright Eugene O’Neill and daughter of Charlie Chaplin, Victoria Chaplin and husband Jean Baptiste Thierrée bring their unique blend of magic and mayhem to Campo Santo with a fun mix of comedy and illusion.
Victoria is the typical Chaplin beauty with long black hair and large blue eyes whose graceful acrobatics are a complete contrast to the ribald routines of her frizzy-haired, clown of a husband. Complex prop costumes are constructed on stage and reconstructed, becoming something entirely diferent. Great fun.

SALIF KEITA – La Différence
An afro-pop singer-songwriter from Mali, Keita is unique not only because of his reputation as the Golden Voice of Africa, but because he has albinism and is a direct descendant of the founder of the Mali Empire, Sundiata Keita. This royal heritage meant that under the Malian caste system, he should never have become a singer, which was deemed to be beneath him.
He was cast out by his family and community because of his albinism. He joined the group, Les Ambassadeurs who quickly became well know. His music combines traditional West African music styles with influences from both Europe and the Americas, while maintaining an overall Islamic style. Musical instruments that are commonly featured in Keita’s work include balafons, djembes, guitars, koras, organs, saxophones, and synthesizers.
His latest album, ‘La Différence’, is dedicated to the struggle of the world albino community for which Keita has been crusading all his life.

‘Umoja’ means ‘the spirit of togetherness’. Created by Todd Twala and Thembi Nyandeni, long time friends from childhood, Africa Umoja is now an internationally acclaimed, award winning South African show filled with music and dance, celebrating African life and culture.
The apartheid laws in 1948 restricted black South Africans from performing musical or theatrical acts before white audiences. When, in the 1970s, the restrictions were lifted, Todd and Thembi developed their artistic entertainment talents.
Africa Umoja tells the story of South Africa’s extraordinary history through a thrilling dance drama performance that leaves audiences in awe.
