Some points to note
The French national health service sets different fees for consulting different types of doctors. (GPs, specialists etc)
Everyone with ’employee’ status is covered by the French national health. (sécurité sociale) This includes spouses and children without employee status themselves.
The CMU (couverture maladie universelle) plan provides health insurance for all persons with legal residence in France, meaning uninterrupted residence for at least three months.
You do not need a referral to see a specialist. You can make a direct appointment with any specialist. (look in the pages jaunes to find lists of specialists) If you visit your doctor for a referral, he or she will simply confirm that you wish to see a specialist - and charge you for it!
According to the sécurite socialé, patients pay 30% of the cost of a general practitioner or specialist visit. Some doctors and specialists however, set their own fees. They are not subsidized by the sécurité sociale.
French health care is among the most expensive in the world for the state, not only due to the high level of reinbursement, but also because there is a great deal of ’over subscibing’ from GPs and specialists alike. Visit your doctor and you are likely to leave with a prescription for several items, not all of which may be necessary.
