There are two basic systems, which will enable you to watch domestic British television, a Free To Air system and a Sky Digibox system. Both require a satellite dish. The FTA (Free To Air) system will give you all the BBC, ITV and FTA channels plus the Radio stations. A Sky Digibox will give these channels and the ability to use a FTV (Free To View) card to watch Channel 4 & 5, without monthly payments. This box also allows you to have Sky subscription should you wish to.
Apart from some very basic settings, a Sky digibox is very much automatic. It will download Sky’s Electronic Program Guide and the software will absorb any transmission changes that can sometimes occur. Where as some Free to Air receivers are factory programmed to several different satellites and several hundred channels. Programming of these receivers is OFTEN necessary and can be very difficult.
FTA receivers also need to be upgraded but, unlike the Sky digibox, it is not necessarily automatic.
Free-to-Air receivers are available from specialised suppliers or from French outlets like the large supermarkets and Bricolage stores. But if you are looking for the best solution - unsubsidised Sky digiboxes can be purchased legally from importers like ourselves.
Competition has never been so fierce in this business and satellite installers are popping up all the time. Some will have a sound technical background and will have invested thousands of euros in spectrum analysers and tools. Most won’t however and will be using a 50-euro meter or worse - a satellite beeper ... to align dishes. All Companies / Individuals who carry out Satellite work will carry a ‘Carte D’Identification’ stating their name and the business activity. This will ensure that the job will be carried out by a professional who is qualified and insured.

With Sky’s wonderful Sky+ you can record on to a hard drive whilst enjoying another side, even record 2 sides, pause live TV, even rewind live TV - it really is a fantastic piece of technology. It’s going to be bigger, better and sharper and will transform TV viewing forever. It is comparable to changing from Black and White to Colour or VHS video to DVD quality, with four times as much picture information and 5.1 Dolby Surround all around you - putting you at the heart of the action. However you will need a television that has the ‘HD Ready logo’ to get the full benefit. (Sky+ & Sky HD will require sky subscription)
